The Committee last met on September 18 and directed staff to solicit additional feedback from the community. A survey was conducted and over 500 responses were received. While 256 (49.04%) respondents were not interested in the idea, 259 (49.62%) were either interested or maybe interested depending on the regulations. Additionally, 138 households indicated that they were interested or maybe interested in keeping chickens themselves.
Some of the common concerns raised about allowing backyard chickens related to potential noise, odor, rodents, predators, enforcement and the welfare of the chickens. The Committee is expected to discuss whether or not regulations can be developed to ease these concerns, as has been done in other communities, or if Shorewood is not well-suited to allow the practice. The Committee's virtual discussion is scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm. Information, including the meeting materials and how to join the meeting, will be posted above and within the Village's Agenda Center.
