[ARCHIVED] Should Shorewood Allow Backyard Chickens?

village hall

While several surrounding communities, including Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, Glendale and Bayside, have allowed the keeping of backyard chickens in recent years, Shorewood's code presently prohibits this practice. In order to continue the conversation, the Committee requested that additional public engagement be performed to get a pulse from the community. To that point, a brief survey has been developed and will be available until Wednesday, October 18 to gather input and identify areas of research or concern. The survey is intended for Shorewood residents only, please submit only one response per household.

Municipalities have removed the keeping of chickens from their prohibitions in part acknowledging the benefits of urban agriculture, which include locally-sourced, home-grown food. Other benefits are noted to include pest control, organic fertilizer and companionship. The potential downsides include noise, odor and waste, disease control and neighborhood friction. In order to balance these benefits and concerns, adequate regulation is important to protect communities from nuisance or public health complaints. Typical regulations include: obtaining a permit, the prohibition of roosters, a maximum allowance of four hens, neighborhood notification or consent, restrictions on the location of enclosures/coops in relation to yards and neighboring residential structures, construction and maintenance standards and the requirement of sanitary and humane conditions.

Stay tuned for continued opportunities to participate.
