The project – recently scheduled for 2022 construction – was deferred by the Village Board in recognition of the impacts of COVID-19 on the Shorewood business community. In addition to the reconstruction of the driving and parking lanes, the project will replace aging watermain and water services the length of the corridor. As noted above, the Village Board the project will also include pedestrian, bicycle and traffic safety improvements as well as green infrastructure enhancements. Ash trees will be evaluated and replaced in accordance with the Village's Ash Tree Replacement Program.

Approved pedestrian, bicycle and traffic safety enhancements include:

  • Bumpouts at all intersection locations where they are feasible (no bus, width or large truck turning radius conflicts).
  • Rapid flashing beacons at key intersections
  • Traffic signals at the Kensington Boulevard intersection
  • Removal of Metro Market southbound turn lane
  • Modification of existing signals to provide emergency vehicle preemption

A review of green infrastructure enhancement opportunities identified the installation of stormwater tree pits at select locations to be the most practical and cost-effective feature for the project.
