[ARCHIVED] Organics Collection Program Continues with Momentum

Compost Crusader

So, you may or may not have seen little brown carts and a super cute little garbage truck servicing them for the last couple of years. The Village of Shorewood has partnered with Compost Crusader since 2018 to help Shorewood residents divert food scraps and yard material all year long.

In 2021 alone, the Village of Shorewood diverted about 200,000 pounds of food scraps with the help of almost 350 residents. Since 2018, these Village residents have diverted almost 500,000 pounds of food scraps. A 2021 WI DNR Waste Audit revealed that 30% of our landfills are made up of food scraps. They not only take up precious space within our limited landfills, but also produce a harmful greenhouse gas within the landfill. Composting eliminates these issues in our landfill and also creates a beneficial compost that can be used in gardens and green infrastructure.

Sign up is very simple and can be done online here. More information on the program, including what we can and cannot accept can be found here.
