On February 23, the Plan Commission approved a parking special exception for a potential 42-unit multi-family redevelopment on the northwest corner of E. Capitol Dr. and N. Stowell Ave. (
meeting details). That project was described to include 20% of its units (9 units) with rent-restricted income limits (income below 50% of Milwaukee County’s median income).
The developer requested a special exception to the Village’s parking requirements for new apartment buildings, which require 1.75 enclosed spaces per unit. Based on that requirement, 74 spaces would have been needed. However, the developer requested that the development only have 43. The developer indicated a belief that providing one space per bedroom would be adequate, and suggested that the 8 additional spaces could be accommodated through on-street parking.
After the Plan Commission’s approval, several neighbors appealed that decision to the Village’s Board of Appeals based on a belief that a lack of substantial evidence was provided to warrant the exception. At their May 4 meeting, the Board of Appeals accepted the appeal and remanded the decision back to the Plan Commission for reconsideration and an explicit determination of its findings. The matter will be taken up at a future Plan Commission meeting, and information will be posted to the
Village’s website.
