[ARCHIVED] Joint Statement from the Village and Schools on the Chauvin Court Ruling

This week, we witnessed a historical moment: for the first time in Minnesota, a white police officer was found guilty of murder of a Black man. The outcome was far from inevitable, despite the overwhelming evidence. And while Tuesday’s verdict is long-awaited, it is not justice. George Floyd is still dead. His daughter has still lost her father. And the system is still broken: more Black and Brown men, women and children were killed by police officers during the Chauvin trial.

This past year has pushed all of us to reflect much more deeply upon our roles in both creating and dismantling systems of oppression and racism. We have made progress with our equity and inclusion efforts, but we have a long way to go.

We, the elected officials of Shorewood, remain committed to the ongoing fight against racism and for justice. We stand together in recognition of this moment and are committed to work together to hold ourselves and one another accountable. We acknowledge the commitment that staff across our organizations have made to address the impact of systemic racism in our community. We will continue to invest in, and support, that work in ways that reflect community partnership.

Black lives matter. True justice means that all people feel safe and cared for in their community. We can and must get there together.
