This discussion introduces another topic that will need community deliberation. There has been growing interest from individuals and groups in the community to explore banning all smoking activities in parks, which would also include Atwater Beach.
The North Shore Health Department gathered some data to begin illustrating the concept and frequency of smoke-free parks and beaches. While there are currently no known smoke-free beaches in Wisconsin, there are several municipalities who banned smoking in public parks. Some of those municipalities include Appleton, Oshkosh, Verona, and Wisconsin Dells. A report completed in 2017 shows a total of 317 municipalities in the country that have designated beaches as smoke-free. California state law prohibits smoking and vaping at playgrounds, sandbox areas, public parks, and youth sporting events to protect children from secondhand smoke.
Part of the Village Board's motion this week was to engage in public discussion on the topic of prohibiting smoking and vaping in public parks and beaches. The North Shore Health Department plans to take immediate action in beginning to get public input by surveying community members at the beach next week to get their input.
