The Village of Shorewood prides itself on being an inter-generational community. This means we make it a priority to make our community conducive for all community members, no matter if they are a young student at one of the elementary schools or a senior resident who has lived in the community for over 50 years.
This past Monday, the Senior Resource Center, the Elder Services Advisory Board, and Shorewood Connects presented the proposed Age-Friendly Plan to the Village Board. After Shorewood became the first Wisconsin community recognized as an Age-Friendly Community by AARP, community members began discussions to develop this plan and create action steps to continue supporting all generations in our Village. Sue Kelley (Shorewood Connects Coordinator) played an instrumental role in putting together this plan. Thanks to the help of the Senior Resource Center and the Elder Services Advisory Board, the plan was generated based on a great deal of research and information. The plan identifies four priority areas for Shorewood to concentrate on:
- Create more housing options for people with moderate incomes
- Improve Shorewood's walk-ability
- Develop neighborhood connection activities and programs
- Increase the awareness and use of the Senior Resource Center to help seniors find and gain access to health and supportive services
Implementation of the Age-Friendly Plan is a community-driven project to be facilitated through the Shorewood Connects Coordinator. The intent of the plan is not to increase staff time beyond the normal course of duties but instead involve the community to help initiate the action steps. If you have any questions related to the plan or want to be involved with some of the next steps, contact Elizabeth Price (Senior Resource Center Coordinator) at 414.847.2727.
