The draft ordinance is based on adopted code in Milwaukee and Wauwatosa, which has been in place since 2011 and 2013, respectively. Highlights of the draft include a limit on the number of chickens that could be kept (4), a prohibition of roosters and location restrictions on the placement of chicken coops in yards and in relation to residential buildings.
Prior to consideration, the Board is expected to discuss potential neighborhood consent or notice requirements at the meeting. If adopted, the change is drafted to go into effect on March 1, 2024.
