One unwelcome sign of spring, however, is the large accumulation of litter. As the snow melts and spring rains arrive, they wash away litter, chemicals, and leftover salt from sidewalks and streets, all of which flow directly into the river.

So, get outside and help us clean up the Milwaukee River this spring, summer and fall. Mark your calendar for these upcoming cleanups:

• Saturday, April 26 - Milwaukee Riverkeeper Spring Cleanup. Register for Shorewood or any local river.
• Saturday, July 19 - Shorewood's Milwaukee River cleanup - a Milwaukee Riverkeeper's Adopt-A-River Cleanup with the Shorewood Waters Project and Shorewood Conservation Committee.
• Saturday, October 18 - Shorewood's Milwaukee River Cleanup - a Milwaukee Riverkeeper's Adopt-A-River Cleanup with the Shorewood Waters Project and Shorewood Conservation Committee.

Anytime: get cleanup support from Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful (KGMB) to help clean up a park or neighborhood area. Anyone can organize a clean up! They provide buckets and trash bags and loan tools for your cleanup event from March 1 through October 31.
