What Is Single-Use Plastic?

Single-use plastics are disposable plastic items designed to be used once and then thrown away. Common examples include plastic bags, straws, cutlery, water bottles, and food packaging. These items are typically made from petroleum-based chemicals and are not biodegradable, meaning they can take hundreds of years to break down in the environment.

Single-use plastics have become widespread due to their convenience and low cost. However, their environmental impact is significant especially in oceans, lakes and waterways where they harm marine life and ecosystems. Animals often mistake plastic for food or become entangled in it, leading to injury or death.

Our convenience is no excuse to harm the planet and ourselves! It’s time we Catch the Wave Shorewood and lead the way to make a difference in our community and beyond. Many countries and cities have already introduced bans, taxes, or regulations to encourage alternatives like reusable bags, metal straws, and biodegradable packaging.

Reducing single-use plastic is a crucial step toward a more sustainable future and protecting the health of ourselves and our planet.
