[ARCHIVED] Sewer Relief is Coming!

MMSD Logo

The Village of Shorewood’s combined sewer service area (CSSA) has an extensive network of local combined sewers generally draining the portion of Shorewood east of North Oakland Avenue and North of East Edgewood Avenue, and areas in the City of Milwaukee (Milwaukee), including the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) campus, and northeast side neighborhoods east of Oakland and north of East Hartford Avenues. Shorewood’s combined sewer system has been prone to surcharging and water entering basements during high intensity, short duration rainfall events. This project will improve the hydraulic connection from Shorewood combined sewers to District facilities by providing additional hydraulic capacity that will improve the discharge of design flows from Shorewood and Milwaukee combined sewers into District facilities, thereby reducing basement backups.

THE PROBLEM:

The major rainfall events of July 2020 caused widespread flooding across the Milwaukee area and were particularly devastating tot he Village of Shorewood with hundreds of homes experiencing surface or basement flooding.

THE SOLUTION:

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) is building a new sewer to increase the capacity of its regional sewer system and, in turn, Shorewood's local system. This MMSD project will provide capacity for the Village's proposed Southeast Area Combined Sewer Improvements program which includes the installation over of 11,000 lineal feet of additional sewer pipe beginning in 2023.

HOW WILL IT WORK?

Approximately 2,3300 feet of new 72" sewer pipe will be installed using micro-tunneling deep below Edgewood Avenue from N. Maryland Avenue to an area west of the Oak Leaf Trail. In times of high flow, excess wastewater will flow from the existing sewer system into the new pipe to be conveyed to the Deep Tunnel for storage and treatment.

WHEN WILL IT START?

Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2021. The project will be fully complete in the spring of 2023.
