[ARCHIVED] Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during this time in our history

Martin-Luther-King-Jr

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an honorable American and a remarkable hero. Even though it has been over 52 years since his passing, we continue to be inspired by his actions and words. Especially in this moment of our history, it is important for us to reflect on his wisdom. Here is one of his quotes we all should reflect on:

"Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."

On Monday, January 4, Village President Allison Rozek presented a proclamation with Human Relations Commission President Sharveta Parker and Village Trustee Wesley Warren recognizing Monday, January 18, 2021 as Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a day to celebrate, educate, advocate and serve. The proclamation was drafted by several North Shore community members (with the leadership of Bay Bridge) who sent the proclamation to all the North Shore governing boards asking for them to sign and present the proclamation to their communities. The proclamation encourages all of us to find a way to serve as a way to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community members can read the entire proclamation here starting on page 35.

While some may have concerns about serving during the pandemic, there are plenty of opportunities where you can serve or help safely and/or virtually. The Village strongly encourages community members to go to www.mlknsmke.com to see a calendar that has a full list of service opportunities for MLK Day. This calendar is being shared with all North Shore communities and Milwaukee neighborhoods as a call for action this MLK Day. Please make it a priority to find a way to serve. It's time for all of us to show some love for others. Thank you to Bay Bridge, the Human Relations Commission and all the other community partners who drafted and reviewed this proclamation.
