During and after our most recent snowfalls, the Village of Shorewood received several inquiries regarding snow emergency declaration, plowing of Village streets, and plowing of public and private parking lots. This created an excellent opportunity for staff to provide our residents with information to help them navigate winter in Shorewood.
Snow emergencies are declared by the Village Manager. The Village has not called a snow emergency in more than 25 years. However, if a snow emergency is declared, the Village will: 1) notify the major TV and radio stations, 2) place an alert message on the Village website and 3) send an alert message to individuals who have signed up to receive such notifications through the Alert Center. A snow emergency requires that vehicles not park on any Village street, alley or highway, except as designated in Village Code Sec. 500-40. Please contact the Shorewood Police Department, Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., excluding holidays, for additional information.
Plowing and salting operations give first priority to main and residential streets. Snow cleanup is done after all the streets have been plowed to approved standards and the snowfall has ended. Snow cleanup is prioritized as follows: intersections, boulevard crossovers, bus stops, areas where cars were parked during the initial plowing, and clearing corners (residents at corner properties are responsible for clearing snow from the pedestrian sidewalk ramps to the street). Snow removal from the business district parkway areas and from public parking lots is dependent on many factors. This work is completed on an “as needed” basis as time and manpower allow after all other winter operations have been completed. Snow plowing/removal from private lots is managed by the property owner. Although the Village leases spaces for residents for off-street, night parking on private lots, the Department of Public Works staff does not plow/remove snow from private property. It is the responsibility of the property owner to make arrangements for snow plowing/removal. Village staff will attempt to reach out to the property owner in response to resident concerns about the condition of a private lot.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as Public Works staff continues to work to restore and maintain safe driving conditions on our roadways for the convenience and safety of residents and the general public during these winter months.
